+-+Chaos Dwarf are pretty much confirmed to be in TW:W3 at this point, and they are, I think a very interessing faction because of how their civilisation work. So a interessing exercice would be I think to imagine how could they work. For that I'm gonna first make a quick rundown of some of the most important elements of their civilisation. LORE
*Where does Chaos Dwarf live ? *
Chaos Dwarf descend from the so called "Dwarf of the East" who in the time before the fall of the Old Ones, explored the north of the World Edge mountains, there, where the mountain of Mourn join them, they found a great high plateau, dominating the Dark Lands.
They called it Zorn Uzkul : the Great Skull Land. It was a inhospitable place, but a rich one. And altough most of the dwarfs called the place cursed, some stuborn one (as the dwarfs tend to be) refused to leave and founded Uzkulak, the Place of the Skull.
Then came the Great Cataclysm, and Chaos pourred from the North, like never before, and never since. They where cut from their kin and the Ancestor gods, and in maddened (and probably Chaos induced) folly and despair, they begged for help, any help.
Their runesmith traced rune on great black obelisk, calling for anyone who would listen. And something answered their call, Hashut, Father of Darkness
but we shall talk about him later ; the fact is, thank to this they survived, and expanded south, below the great cliff that mark the end of Zorn Uzkul, after a short strip of land is the Great Plan of Plain of Zharrduk, a gigantic plain, a bit lower than the rest of the Dark lands (wich mean the cliff of Zorn Uzkul is even more impressive from here). There they founded they greatest and only "proper" city : Zharr-Naggrund (or Mingol Zharr-Naggrund whatever) the tower of Fire and Desolation (wich is a charming name ; you should notice by now the naming convention of the Chaos Dwarf is quite flowery and upbringing).
It's a gargantuan city, one of the biggest in the world, taking the form a of titanic Ziggurath, the entire city being built on/in grand step, who also serve as the wall of the city. It's a gigantic forge, where countless slave die each day, a river pass by the city and is used for it's industry, exiting the city poluted beyond mesure. The smoke is such that it form volcanic cloud, meaning the entire city (and possibly plain) is plunged into perpetual night, tough it's not a dark place, for the great fire of the city and secondary forge illuminate the night, as do entire lake of burning oil and river of molten lava.
Yes it's basicly freaking Mordor. WELCOME TO FUCKING BOATMURDERED, HOPE YOU LIKE MIASMA.
They have other city, but it's more like grand stronghold that overwatch the Dark Lands, on a side not, their original city, Uzkulak now is a port that link their capital to the Sea of Chaos so they can trade with Norsca and Chaos guys. Hashut Father of Darkness
Hashut is the God of the Chaos Dwarf , no one know what he is exactly, some think he is a Chaos God, other a Greater Demon who took his independance or something else entierely. Personnaly I bet on a minor Chaos God
Not unlike Malal there is no chaos god by this name And if there was one he would not be "Minor"
but that for you to decide. Anyway, he is a God of Fire, Greed and Tyranny (and HAAATTTTREEEEEEED) ; he is associated/his domains are Fire (as he like to put shit in fire and you need fire to melt thing and forge them), Tyranny, Slavery (more on that later) and Industry.
But make no mistake, he is no god of progress, he is the bad side of Industry, he is the god of sending children in the charcoal mine instead of adult because at the end of the month you win 3$ more by head ; when you underequip worker and work them overhour, exploiting them and paying with ticket you can only utilise in the company store: this is a prayer to him. He is the god who devour forest, soil the sea and strip the lands, who crush people under iron wheel, all to feed the fire of Industry and extend his Tyranny farther and farther. Until finaly he consume the whole world in his unquenchable, insatiable Greed. And still he will hunger. For no time, nor wealth, will ever quench or even abate his endless greed, envy and desire, nor the one of his follower.
He take the form, or at least is represented as a ever-burning bull, with monstruous wings, clothed in ember, smoke and shadow.
Hashut is venerated by the Sorcered-Prophet, the High Priest of the cult of Hashut, who lead the Sorcerer also called Daemonsmith (who are priest of the cult) and CD society in general. They wield the winds of Fire, Death and Metal, but also the dark magic of Hashut. Howewer, Dwarf where not made to manipulate the winds of magic, and no matter how much the Father of Darkness changed them, they are cursed by this. Each sorcerer is slowly and inevitably being changed in a statue of solid stone, bit by bit, until finally they are immobile, and lined up on the great road to the capital, forming grand line of statue.
He is also responsible for the Bull-Centaur, wich are exactly what you imagine: centaur with the torso of a Chaos Dwarf and body of a great bull. They are bulky and strong creature, who serve as the guardian of the Great Temple of Hashut in the capital. They are equiped with some of the best armor and weapon, tough they will hapily kill with hands, teeth or horn if they have some, for they love their meal alive. With time their skin harden and become metal-like, to the point they don't heal normally and must be "reforged" by their Priest master.
So yeah, he is a nice guy , not affraid of anything and uh...did nothing wrong. Chaos Dwarf Society
This will be short, since it has been discuted in the earlier section, but basicly, Tyranny. Sorcerer rule over part of the city or secondary forge/stronghold, and hold council, where the oldest and more powerfull hold more influence. Chaos dwarf live only to forge, kill and enslave the world ; you think the Dark elves are the greatest slaver of the world ? Think again, Chaos dwarf lead entire army to the rest of the world, to take great many slave, who are to be worked to death, thrown alive in the cauldron, feed to the Bull-Centaur or sacrified to Hashut (wich is basicly being thrown in the cauldron) among other grim fate. They are more inovative than the classic dwarf, having less respect for tradition ; alway trying to invent new warmachines, weapon, armor and whatnot, using dark science and sorcery for this. They also use daemon ; but not like other Chaos faction, for they despise them: Chaos Dwarf bow only to Hashut, and summon demon only to enslave them, binding them to armor, weapon, using them to fuel their forge and machinery or creating terryfing blend of demon and machine or automaton in their mad ambition. Grudge and Oath are still a big deal howewer, as is the respect of the elder. GAMEPLAY Campaign mechanic
So first off, Chaos Dwarf have few cities, and most of them are more like Stronghold, with Zharr-Naggrund being the only "real" city. This should be reflected somehow ; maybe with Zharr-Naggrund having a LOT of construction slot, but being slow to grow, and their minor settlement having few developement possibility (maybe something like the Wood Elves outpost ?) with like 3 great Stronghold disperesed amongst the Dark Lands being the only other place with lot of slot. This would encourage a "Raiding" mentality: you go out in the world to take slave and plunder and return to the capital with it, to rebuild your force. They should also have the slave system, and even I would say a uppgraded version of it, because while the DE are the best known slaver in the world, Chaos Dwarf don't just pratice it, they WORKSHIP it. Feeding Hashut his regular share of slave should be a constant tough in the head of the player, with terrible punishement if you let the Father of Darkness hunger for too long. Maybe you could take some
city and use them as regular settlement (maybe only major settlement while minor are all outpost ?) but the growth of the empire should be slow, to reflect how Chaos Dwarf rule, and enslave the population ; maybe when you take a city, if you leave immediatly with your army, you get MAJOR public order penalty, so you must leave your force here until the population is...pacified.
Another idea is something a lot of people talked about : Hero leading army (or rather "Patrol" or something like that). Chaos Dwarf are slaver at hearth, and maybe we could have a "Overseer" or "Slave master" (probably Infernal Castelan if they use already existing hero) hero who can lead a small army of let's say 8 unit for example, maybe with restriction like "limited range outside your territory" or "Can't recruit in global recruitement" or even "can't use army stance/limited army stance" that would illustrate the idea of small group patrolling the Dark lands, leading slave in this. The idea of hero leading group in general is something I really like, as it would allow small scale battle even in mid or late game, ideally they should have faster movement speed too, so they can catch so dam "Raider army" who just attack your shit and run away the moment one of your army aproach (Howewer with their small size they would only be able to "Pin" a larger group until the reinforcement arrive) ; and fulfill a really cool fantasy (Imagine a Witch Hunter patroling the wood with a small detachement of spearman and crossbowman, supported by a unit of free company, investigating rumor of beastman).
As for diplomaty they should have the capacity to trade with Chaos Warrior (this make sense as they are the one who equip the army of chaos. What do you think all those evil armor and blade where forging themselve ?), Norsca, Ogre and maybe Greenskin. For most other faction, they should act like Chaos.
Except for Dwarfs , they should start at war with Dwarf and be unable to even engage diplomaty with them. You must understand there is possibly nothing the Dwarf hate more than the Chaos Dwarf ; maybe they hate them even more than Greenskin and Skaven. They are traitor of the worst kind, who insult and mock their whole kin by using MAGIC
and who, as you probably constated reading the lore part, in every aspect a dark reflect of everything that make Dwarf the Dwarfs. Every single thing they are is a twisted, dark and evil aspect of dwarf culture ; their progress a proof of dwarf ingeniosity and genius, but also a corrupted version of their intelligence. Dwarf hate them so much and are so ashamed of their existence, even friend of the Dawi like Felix must be carefull when speaking of their existence. Magic
Unlike Dwarf, Chaos Dwarf wield magic, well sorcery (tough they have lost the traditional use of their ancestral rune, and only use them to enchant weapon, tough they favoadd sorcery in this matter too, since being a "new hold" when they splitted they didn't have lot of mastery of rune to begin with) with Demonsmith being the Hero level mage and Sorcerer Prophet the lord level one. They wield the lore of Fire, Death, Metal and Hashut. I imagine the Lord will have the lore of Hashut to distinguish them, whill the hero will use Fire, Metal and Death. A interessing note is that the Lamassu, one of the mount choice for Sorcerer Prophet is himself a sorcerer. To be precise a sorcerer of the lore of Shadow (wich the CD don't normally have access to) ; this could be very interessing, I imagine this could work a bit like Azhag crown, but having two lore on normal lord would be a bit overpowered (especially when even the freaking Slaan don't have this -Or even Mazdamundi because fuck Lizardmen am I right ?-). Lore of Hashut
The lore of Hashut is as subtile as his patron, the in game info is a bit dated and it was focused only on a particular group of the CD dwarf army but it was basicly this: Attribute :
"If direct dammage spell or magic missile target a unit with flammable, they get +D3bonus to casting" this would probably translate as MOAR bonus dammage against flammable target, or resistance reduction. Only spell 1 and 3 are affected by that. **Signature spell -Breath of Hatred :
* Buff, Short range, give "Hatred" (so bonus Melee Attack in TW I think) for all the battle
if overcast become a bubble. Wew this one is crazy, making it very short range and just making it a very long buff should make it more balanced
- 1 Burning Wrath : Very Short range magic missile who make random number of hit. Could be translated by random size of explosion. Overcast make biger boom boom
- 2 Dark Subjugation : Medium range Debuff, Leadership test, if failed, perma loose LD. I guess a good old moral nuke spell that work better on low leadership unit. Overcasted : Debuff more ?
- 3 Curse of Hashut : Medium range, Direct damage, target a single model, work better on low Toughness ennemy but ignore armor (so elves). Would easily translate as a "Snipe spell" anti-character spell, work better fragile unit and ignore armor. Overcast Idk more range or dammage or something.
- 4 Ash Storm : God-Send spell, long to med range give small debuff to hit (Melee attack) in melee, bigger debuff to range(Accuracy), can't fly, charge or march (so run) ; treat all terrain as dangerous (no idea how to translate this), wizzard can only cast on themselve and the more important MAKE UNIT FLAMMABLE. By Hashut this is so powerfull. This will probably never pass without getting nerf, so I guess forgot the mage effect, reduce range and make it not to long ; keep the rest, this spell basicly make the lore
- 5 Hell Hammer : Short range, direct damage in a straight line, kinda like wind of death or similar spell. If it kill a model unit must take panic (I guess translate at "if this inflict X casualty moral dammage") Overcast double the range.
- 6 Flames of Azgorh : Direct dammage with UNLIMITED FUCKING RANGE "circular" aoe who hit like a absolute ton of brick, unit in the center of it are hit even harder. If Overcast AOE is larger. High miscast chance.
Talking about miscast, it's time to talk about the Curse of Stone I spoke of earlier (the whole "Turn into Statue" thing). basicly when you miscast, you test Toughness, if you fail take a wound (wich is a lot of damage, so probably your sorcerer take a big it in Total War). But first time it's happen you get one more T because your stone now (armor bonus ?).
Overall a pretty powerfull and very direct lore, who synergize really well with their fire lore (and metal lore in TT because metal lore damage spell are flamming Idk don't ask me), should probably cost a lot to balance it's strengh. Army style
Gonna split this in three Chaos Dwarf
I guess they should have low number, and few different unit, but a lot of unit variation. For example Chaos Dwarf Warrior could be the classical shield variant, the Blunderbuss variant (Short range gun who hit hard) and Fireglaive variant (basicly a crazy Halberd-Gun). Same for Infernal Guard and their elite version the Infernal Ironsworn (who get enchanted weapon/magic attack). Bull-Centaur also get here. Imagine them as some kind of Minotaur (while I am at it, I really don't like the Forgeworld Bull-centaur unit, too "Beastmany". The hero is alright.) : a fast, hard hitting unit, with huge charge bonus. Except those one are tanky. Few model count and expansive of course. This is also where most of the Hero will come from. This include the classic "Mage and Captain" hero, but also a Hero version of Bull-Centaur, basicly a Doombull but with heavy armor (I start to think beastman fan will love Chaos Dwarf). Slave
Mostly Hobegobelin, with their own hero choice the Hobegobelin Khan. But also all kind of greenskin (and possibly Ogre or more exotic thing). There should be some kind of mechanic that prevent you from having too much slave in a given army, probably along the lines of "No more Slave than Dwarf unit". Cheap dirt unit, for decent stat to counterbalance that, wich is nice since CD unit should cost a liver. Each. Recruit more slave than possible could lead to two thing: either you simply can't do it OR you can, but have high risk of "Slave revolt" with your Lord getting wounded and your army either forced to fight the revolting slave (who get a Lord) or paralize for a turn while the rebell army form. Monster and other Toy
The part everyone wait for, and the one CD should really shine at. All kind of crazy artillery from Magma Canon (exactly what you think it is), Deathshrieker (Hellstorm rocket battery meet Stalin Orgue), Dreadquake mortar (Steam-powered giant canon who make really really really BIG boum when they hit -they have slow cadency in lore because steam take time to build up), Iron Daemon War Machine (TCHOO TCHOO THE RAPE TRAIN HAS NO BREAK -Giant angry locomotive with canon and a demon inside, can carry your other warmachine.) and of course the classical Hell Canon. Oh and Daemonsmith buff your artillery.
For the Monster part, it's mainly character mount and the classical giant, but also K'daai who are Half-Fire something, Half-Demon locked into giant armor and thrown into the fray, they are monstruous infantry and have tendency to explode. Also the so called "K'daai Destroyer" who is the monster version of the K'daai and a absolute beast against everything that don't resist fire.
So hum that's all, what do you think Chaos dwarf will be ? What would you WANT them to be ? What do you think of the ideas ? Do you want more info one some particular point ?
